This term is often abused and misused in the mineral supplement industry. The scientific definition of an "ion" is an atom that has acquired an electric charge through the gain or loss of an electron or electrons. An ion is a group of atoms that has a charge of either positive or negative. Anything metallic is considered to be "ionic". For example, your belt buckle is ionic because it has a charge of either positive or negative. All minerals (both 100% organic and inorganic) will have a charge of either positive or negative.

Scientists believe that the only circumstance in which the "charge" would scientifically prove beneficial (or make a difference in any capacity) to the human body is when the endothelial lining of the small intestines (consisting of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum) is stable at a perfect and neutral pH of 7. No one has a perfect pH of 7, especially in the U.S., where chronic acidosis from fast foods, coffee, acidic juices, etc. have become a way of life.
